When I want to make dessert, I often think to myself, "I'm going to make a pie." But then I think about how fussy a crust can be, what with cutting in the butter, and worrying about how much liquid to add, and chilling the dough, and rolling out the dough, and pre-baking lower crusts, and all of that nonsense. And then I think to myself, "screw that, I'm going to make a crumble." It takes about three minutes to whip up a crumble topping, there's less fat than in a pie crust, and there are oats in it, which means it's totally healthy. When I do make a crumble topping, this is the recipe I use. If you have more than you need, the rest can be bagged and frozen until you make your next crumble.
1 cup oats
1 cup flour
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
In a medium bowl, mix together all ingredients until thoroughly combined. Sprinkle over fruit filling until well covered.
